Moving will always require work. If you choose to hire a full service moving company then you are going to need to do some research. That is work. If you are going to get a rental truck and do the move yourself, then you will be doing even more work. Local moves are pretty straight forward and easy, but moving to another state is a completely different story all together. It will require quite a bit more work, and it will also cost quite a bit more. Here are some tips if you are facing an out of state move.

Keeping costs down

No matter how you look at it, moving to another state is going to cost you more money. You can try your hardest to save some money, and there is nothing wrong with that, but the further you have to move, the more it is going to cost you.

There are a few things that you can do to help lower your costs on an out of state move. The first thing that you can do is lighten the load. Do you really need to move everything that you own, or can you sell off some of your stuff. If you have less stuff to move, the cheaper it will be to move. You may even be able to make a buck or two selling some of your things.

The next way that you can save some money on a state to state move is to make sure that everything is properly organized for the move. This means getting all of your things together, and getting packed in a timely manner. If you are renting a moving truck, make sure to get your truck rental quotes will in advance of moving. Your truck rental quotes should come in handy with the next step to out of state moving, your moving budget.

That’s right, you are going to need a budget to move. If you don’t keep tabs on all of your expenses, then you might run out of money before you can move. This would not be a good thing. Moving out of state may include some extra expenses that moving in state would not. You may have the extra expense of food, and don’t forget about a place to sleep. If you are traveling a long distance, it is a good idea to make sure that you have plenty of money for hotel rooms. It is not a good idea to sleep in your car.

If you are hiring a moving company, then make sure that you get your moving quotes well in advance of your move. You will also need to make sure that you are properly prepared for the movers. This can save everyone some time, and when it comes to moving, time equals money.

Make sure that you are fully aware of the the new rules that you may be facing in your new state. You will need to update your drivers license, your vehicle registration, and you may have to start paying state sales tax. Each and every state has their very own rules. Make sure that you are aware of them.

Using a rental truck can really help you cut down on the costs associated with moving, but you should still have a budget that prevents you from spending too much money. There is one thing that you are going to have to factor into your moving costs when you use a rental truck, and that is the cost of fuel.

In just the past four years, the cost of fuel has almost doubled while the average income has actually dropped. This has caused problems for some people, and it can really make moving more difficult. You are going to need to keep a watchful eye on your fuel consumption to avoid going over your moving budget. What you need is a way to determine how much money you are going to need to spend of fuel. You need some sort of rental truck fuel calculator, but before you can even start to calculate the cost of fuel for your rental truck, you are going to need to know some basics about the different moving trucks that are available

Moving trucks are big. They can haul a lot of stuff. This means that they have big engines. Big engines will require more fuel to operate them, and with a fully loaded cab, it takes even more fuel to get everything moving. Let’s face the facts here. Rental trucks do not get the best gas mileage, and you simply can’t expect them to. It is just part of the trade off that comes with being able to haul so many things at once.

If you look at the most fuel efficient vehicles on the planet you will notice a few things. Most of them are very small, and most of them are very light. These are two things that a moving truck are not. Rental trucks are big and you will be hauling all of your stuff so they will be heavy. Here are some average fuel consumptions for rental trucks.

10 foot moving truck – This is one of the smaller sized moving trucks, and you would think that with its smaller size would come a better fuel consumption but that is not the case. A 10 foot moving truck holds an average of 35 gallons of fuel, and it only gets around 6-10 miles per gallon.

16 foot moving truck – Let’s step up to a bigger sized moving truck and see what we get. You might be surprised to find out that the fuel consumption on a 16 foot moving truck is the same as the 12 foot moving truck. You can expect to get about 6-10 miles to the gallon.

24 foot moving truck – Now this is a big moving truck. Do you think that the fuel consumption would be any better? A moving truck of this size would most likely have a diesel engine which means that you will get better gas mileage, but there is a trade off because diesel fuel is more expensive. A 24 foot moving truck with a diesel engine will get around 8-10 miles to the gallon. Not much of an improvement, but when it comes to moving, every penny counts.

The do it yourself mover has a huge list of responsibilities that they must take care of. Moving is a rather large task and when you take it all on by yourself, you may forget a thing or two. You will need to get everything organized, you will need to get all of the packing supplies, you will have to rent a moving truck, and countless other things must be done as well.

If you are doing the move yourself and you have a family, you have to pay special attention to certain parts of the family, specifically the kids. Moving can be a scary and upsetting experience for children. The idea of not having a home or a bed to sleep in can be a really upsetting and frightening thing to think about. As a parent, it is your job to make your children feel comfortable with the move, but with so many things happening at once this can be a very difficult challenge. Here are some tips that will make moving with your children much easier.

The first thing that you need to do is de-stress yourself. If you are stressed out over the move, the kids will pick up on it and it will make them even more uncomfortable. It can be a difficult thing to do, but if you can remain calm, cool and collected, then your kids will handle the move much easier. The next thing that you need to do is convince your children that the move will be an adventure. You can even give the move some type of theme to make the kids enjoy the experience. Try to make it a fun experience, and everything will go smoothly.

Don’t hide the move from your kids. You should be telling your children that you will be moving long before you rent the moving truck. This will give you plenty of time to build up the move. This will give you plenty of time to make it an exciting experience that they will enjoy. Let your children know about everything that is going on with the move. Tell them what you are doing, what needs to be done, and what they can do to help.

You can do a lot for your children by helping them say goodbye to everything, and there is one great way to do this. Throw a going away party. Everyone loves a party. This is one way to keep the move and exciting experience. Have each child make their very own moving box that contains their favorite toys. These boxes will ride with you and your family the whole time. They will always be in plain sight, and when you arrive at your new home, your children will have all of their favorite toys right in front of them.

It can also be a huge help if you introduce your children to your new home before your move in. Give them the grand tour, and show them all of the great features of the new house and neighborhood. If you follow these moving advices, moving with your children will be very easy.

Is the price of gas going to have an adverse affect on the moving industry? The answer to that question remains to be seen, but the rising cost of fuel has already started to affect the cost of most moving companies. If you are not going to use a moving company, you will still have to face the rising cost of fuel. You will need to rent a moving truck, and they are not powered by water. They need gas too. Some moving trucks run on regular gasoline, but most of the moving trucks that are out there run on diesel fuel. Industry analysts expect the cost of diesel fuel to continue to rise well into the year 2013, and it will most likely keep going up from there.

Why is the cost of fuel still rising

That is a question that very few people seem to have the answer to, but there are still plenty of people that are eager to speculate why the cost of fuel is still rising. The economy is showing signs of recovery, or so they say. This could be one of the reasons that the price of gas is rising.

When the economy was in its lowest state, people were not going anywhere. They were not taking vacations. They were not moving, and they were not spending any of their money. Now that the economy is showing some signs of growth people are spending money again. It is not just in the United States either. Other countries all over the globe are starting to show signs of economic improvement. This could be one of the reasons that the cost of fuel is rising.

It is also moving season. Spring is in full swing, and more people are ready to start moving again. When Summer arrives moving season will be in full swing, but will the price of gas be higher or lower? Many seem to think that it will only go up. The current price of diesel fuel is roughly $3.91 per gallon. It is expected to get higher in the next few months, and some are saying that it could easily be 20 cents more per gallon by this time next year. If you want to save some money on your moving expenses, then it is time to start packing up now. The cost of fuel is going up, but you can avoid the higher prices by moving now.

This is a great incentive for moving companies and moving truck rental companies. They are taking advantage of this, and they are spending their marketing dollars to get this type of information in front of as many people as possible. If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, then you had better act fast because the prices are just going to continue to rise, and with moving season quickly approaching, it may become difficult to find a moving company that will be able to work with your schedule.

Start making your plans today before the prices get too high!

Moving is hard enough on its own. Throw in some roommates and moving becomes even more of a challenge, but only if you are unorganized. How in the world can you get everyone to agree on the same thing. Moving into your own place is a great feeling, but it can be difficult to cover all of the costs associated with living in a new place. The quickest and easiest solution to this all too common dilemma, is to have one or more roommates.

Having roommates will allow you to split all of the bills, and it will also allow your split all of the home maintenance. It can be a great feeling not having to deal with 100% of all of the responsibilities. Roommates can help keep the costs of living and moving down, but they can also become a headache all their own. You could be living with a complete stranger, or you could be living with someone that you have known your whole entire life, but when you start sharing living space with someone, friendships can quickly change. Here are some tips that will make moving with roommates a rather simple task.

From the very beginning make sure that you can establish a set of basic ground rules that everyone must follow. Who is going to handle what expenses? If you are moving with roommates you have the advantage of several pairs of hands to help with the move. You will not need to hire a moving company to help you move, but you will need to rent a moving truck. Who is going to be responsible for this? These are the things that you need to think about before you actually move.

One person should be responsible for renting the moving truck, but everyone can help pay for the cost of the rental. The person that actually rents the moving truck must be extra careful of everyone else that is involved with the move. That moving truck is in their name, and they will be 100% responsible for any problems with the moving truck when it gets returned.

Who is going to be responsible for organizing the move? Who is going to be responsible for organizing all of the packing? These are all things that should be determined way before the move happens. You should be working as a team, and every successful team will require good management. A team will need guidance. Which person is going to be the one to guide the team? This decision can usually lead to arguments because it deals with power, but whoever gets the job must have a good head on their shoulders in order to steer the team in the right direction.

By working together, you and your roommates will be able to accomplish so much more in such a shorter period of time. Just remember, there is no “I” in team. It will take the combined skills and everyone must agree on everything in order for the move to be successful.

As if the whole process of moving does not bring up enough questions on its own, there is the subject of moving estimates. You would think that an estimate is an estimate, but when it comes to moving companies this is not the case. Estimates can actually get quite complicated in the moving industry. There are several types to choose from, and they all have different pros and cons. This article will focus on binding estimates.

Binding Estimates

A binding estimate must clearly state your shipment, and all of the services that the moving company is offering you under the moving contract. Moving companies may also charge a small fee for this type of estimate.

A binding estimate is a contract that the moving company must abide by. If you have chosen a binding contract, then the moving company can not charge you any more money than what is stated on the estimate.

If you have requested additional moving services, and the mover has delivered them, then you will be required to pay for these additional services. You will be expected to pay for these services upon delivery of your shipment. There is a rule in place that protects consumers from moving companies if they try to over charge for additional services. These charges can not exceed more than 15% of the original estimate.

The binding estimate has to be in writing, and the moving company must supply you with a copy of the binding estimate prior to the move.

If you have chosen a binding estimate, then you will be expected to pay for the move upon delivery. You will have to pay for the move with cash, money order, cashier’s check, or a certified check. If you are planning on paying with a credit card, the moving company must agree to this before you move.

If for any reason you can not pay the moving company upon receiving your shipment, the moving company may place all of your things in storage at your expense.

There are other rules that must be followed with binding estimates. Each binding estimate must be attached to the original bill of lading. The estimate must also clearly state that the estimate is binding. The estimate must also state that all of the charges that are shown on the estimate are only for the services that are listed on the estimate. The shipment must clearly be described as well as the services that are going to be provided. The moving company can refuse to accept the shipment before it is loaded onto one of their trucks if they believe that you are adding additional items that were not included in the original estimate. Once all of your things are loaded onto the truck, the moving company can not refuse the shipment. The moving company must release all of your things if you have paid for everything in full. Failure to do so is against the law.

Knowing all of this can really help you when it comes time to move.

Determining how much of your stuff can fit onto one moving truck can be quite a challenge. How in the world are you supposed to know if all of your belongings will fit onto one moving truck? Luckily most moving companies can help you make this decision, but even moving companies make mistakes, and sometimes your personal belongings might end up in two separate moving trucks. If this does happen to you. Don’t panic. It is completely normal.

The very first thing that you may think is this. “Am I going to be charged extra for this?” This will not affect the cost of your move. You will still be billed as if your entire shipment was moved on one truck. Even though all of your personal belongings are safe, having your things in two separate moving trucks can cause problems. The most obvious reason that this can cause problems is this. Will the moving company be able to deliver everything at the same time?

When your personal belongings get split into two separate moving trucks by the moving company it is referred to as a “leave behind.” If you look at that term and say it out loud, what do you think? It does not sound very good does it? Why would they call this a leave behind? Does that mean that the second truck that has the rest of your things is not going to arrive at the same time as the new truck. The answer is yes, and that is where having your personal belongings split amongst two completely different moving trucks can cause problems.

Moving will always revolve around a very tight schedule, and now that very tight schedule has been broken.

There is one way that you can make this problem no longer a problem. Before the moving company arrives and starts loading the moving truck, you can prioritize all of your stuff. Go through each room and make sure that you label the most important stuff “priority.” Then inform the movers that you would like to prioritize your move. You would like each item that is labeled “priority” loaded into the moving truck first. If your move does require the use of more than one moving truck, all of the very important things will be in the moving truck that arrives first. Problem solved.

Once you start prioritizing all of personal belongings, you may realize that there are quite a few things that you don’t even really want anymore. The less that you have to move, the easier, faster, and cheaper the move will be. You can even get rid of most of this stuff before the movers even arrive. This is a great way to lighten the load and it almost guarantees that your personal belongings will not be split amongst two different moving trucks. There is nothing worse than having half of your stuff arrive, and the other still in transit on the other side of the country.

Mortgages are just one very small part of the moving process. If you are facing a move, and you are buying a house, then you have some really big life decisions to make. Deciding what type of mortgage is right for you is not as life altering as choosing which moving truck rental company to go with. You will be done with the moving truck in just a few days. Your mortgage is going to last for years. It would be a really good idea to look at all of your options before you make a decision. You can get some great mortgage advice from your friends and family. Talk to people who have already gotten mortgages. Ask them about their experiences. Talk to your parents too. They should be able to give you some really excellent advice. You can even spend some time talking to a mortgage broker, but they may not give you the best advice. A mortgage broker can give you a mortgage menu of sorts, but they may be pushing you to get a mortgage that puts more money in their pockets not yours. A mortgage broker may not have your best interests in mind.

Sorting out all of your options

You will have a lot of mortgage options. You will have a few basic types of mortgage, and you will also have several different time periods to choose from. This article will try to make some sense out of these options.

The two basic types of mortgages are fixed mortgages and adjustable mortgages. They both have their good and bad points. A fixed mortgage is the way to go. When they state that the mortgage is fixed, they are referring to the interest rate. The interest rate will not go up on a fixed mortgage. Your mortgage payment will always be the same for the entire length of the mortgage contract. The only thing that will make your mortgage payment higher would be an increase in property taxes and homeowners insurance. A fixed mortgage would be your best choice because there are no surprise payments.

An adjustable mortgage refers to the fact that the mortgage rate can and will change. If you are thinking that is a good thing, then you are wrong. The interest rate is not going to get lower with an adjustable mortgage. It will only get higher, which means that your mortgage payment will get higher too. These types of mortgages can get you into a house for a lower rate at first, but the rate will go up later. This can be a really bad thing.

After you choose what type of mortgage you want, you will have to choose the length of the mortgage contract. The shorter the mortgage contract length, the more your monthly payments will be. The whole idea is to get a nice balance between a payment that you can afford, and a length of time that you are comfortable with. The average home mortgage is 30 years.

Now that you know more about your mortgage options, you can get on with the move.

So you want to take on the challenge of doing all of the moving grunt work yourself? You have made a great choice that will save you quite a bit of money when the entire move is all finished. Hiring a moving company can be expensive, and you have to work around their schedule. If you are feeling up to the challenge, then you will have no problems moving yourself, but there are a few things that you should not try to move on your own. You may need to get some help from some friends, or you may need to hire a professional to help you move these items.

Pool Table

Pool tables are heavy and cumbersome. Moving one on your own would be next to impossible. In most cases, you will not be able to get it through the door without damaging either the pool table or the house. You will have to take the whole pool table apart, and if you do not know what you are doing, then you may hurt the table or yourself. If you have a pool table, and you have no experience moving it, you had better hire a professional to help you.

Piano

Pianos are another tricky thing to move. When you buy a piano, it is professionally delivered, but when you move, who is going to move this giant thing? Have you ever even tried to lift your piano? They are not very light, and believe it or not they are very fragile. If you don’t know what you are doing, you could very easily break the piano or knock it out of tune. A piano that is out of tune, it practically worthless. This is one item where it will pay to hire a professional.

Tropical Aquarium

If you have an elaborate fish tank setup in your house, it could be one of the most challenging things to move. Not only do you have to move the tank itself, but you have to safely transport all of the living creatures inside it as well. This is most definitely a challenge that many people are not up to. If you thought that the fish tank was fragile, wait until you see just how fragile all of the living creatures inside it are. Moving a fish tank is one of the toughest moving challenges that you will face. Make sure that you know what you are doing.

Big Televisions

There once was a time when big televisions were rare. Today that is a much different story. Almost every household in the United States has a big television, and moving them can be difficult for several reasons. They are fragile and they can be extremely heavy. Make sure that you get the help that you need to move your large television.

Moving any of these items can be a challenge. Make sure that you are up to this challenge, and make sure that you rent a moving truck that is big enough to haul all of your things.

So you have decided to move yourself. You don’t need a moving company to help you get things done. You have a big enough family that everyone can pitch in, and the entire moving process can be finished in no time at all. You are going to need to get a moving truck, and that means that you are going to have to drive this moving truck once it is completely loaded and ready to go. Driving a moving truck may be similar to driving a car, but for the most part it is completely different. Here are a few tips that will make driving your moving truck a breeze.

Use your mirrors

The moving truck has mirrors for a reason. They are there so that you can see everything that is going on around you and the moving truck. You won’t be able to see quite everything with your mirrors, but you will be able to see a lot of things around you. Don’t forget about the blind spots. They are still there, and forgetting about them can be very dangerous. Some newer moving trucks will have cameras instead of rear view mirrors. Cameras will completely eliminate those blind spots. When you are backing the moving truck in, it will help to have someone standing outside of the vehicle to help guide you in.

Beware of your vertical clearance

Moving trucks are a lot taller than regular everyday cars and trucks. You will have to pay close attention to how tall your moving truck is and how tall everything around you is. All overpasses on the highways and interstates will have a clear maximum height labeled on the outside, but trees and other natural landmarks will not. This is where it really pays to have someone help guide you in. There are already plenty of videos on the internet today of moving trucks hitting tall trees. You don’t need to add another one.

Your moving truck is much wider

Everyone knows that a moving truck is much wider than a regular vehicle, so what is the big deal? When you are driving your moving truck, you will have to give yourself more room to turn. You will have to make much wider turns. If you don’t, you will hop the curb, and take out everything in your path. Give yourself the extra room that you need to make those extra wide turns.

Keep right

Remember that the right lane on the highway and interstate is for slower moving vehicles. This is where you should be if this is your first time driving a moving truck. Take it nice and slow and easy. This is not a race. Driving a moving truck that is completely loaded should be done slowly if you do not have experience.

Stop

You will also need to give yourself plenty of room to stop. It will take a fully loaded moving truck a lot longer to stop than your car. Make sure that you give yourself enough room to stop safely.
